Or: How a Small Piece of High-Tech from Andernach Becomes a Global Player
Andernach is known for the world’s tallest cold-water geyser, its historic city wall, and its location on the Rhine. What’s less well known is that products from here find their way to nearly every region of the world. I am one of them: a transdermal therapeutic system, or TTS for short.
My journey begins at LTS Lohmann Therapie-Systeme AG. Not on a map, but in development departments, laboratories, and production areas where expertise, experience, and precision come together. Before I even see the light of day, scientists, engineers, and numerous other experts have already invested countless hours in my development.
From Concept to Product
At first glance, I seem unremarkable. A thin patch, no larger than the palm of a hand.
But appearances can be deceiving.
I contain technology designed to deliver active ingredients through the skin in a controlled manner. For this to work reliably, many details must be perfectly coordinated. Material properties, active ingredient release, adhesion, and stability are carefully developed and tested.
In short: For a product my size, I’m surprisingly sophisticated.
Quality Knows No Compromises
Before I’m allowed to set out on my journey, I’m put through a thorough inspection.
Do I meet the requirements? Does everything work as intended? Can I withstand the stresses of transport and storage?
The answer must be unequivocal every time: Yes!
Because whether my final destination is New York, São Paulo, Sydney, or Tokyo, the expectations for quality and safety are the same everywhere.
A True Export Product
After numerous inspections, the exciting part of my journey finally begins.
Packed and ready for shipment, I leave Andernach. From there, I travel through logistics centers, airports, and distribution channels to a wide variety of countries and markets.
In the process, I get to see much more of the world than many people do.
While others collect vacation photos, I collect customs stamps and frequent flyer miles.
Different everywhere, united at the destination
Along the way, I encounter a wide variety of cultures, languages, and ways of life.
But no matter where I end up, my mission remains the same: to be part of a treatment that people can rely on.
This usually happens quietly—without much fanfare or headlines.
But often, it is precisely these unassuming products that make an important contribution to everyday life.
When I look back on my journey, one thing stands out in particular:
My journey does not begin in one of the world’s major metropolises, but on the Middle Rhine.
Here at LTS, innovative drug delivery systems—among other things—are developed and used worldwide. These products demonstrate that international reach and innovation aren’t necessarily tied to a location in New York, London, or Singapore.
Sometimes, a global success story begins right here in Andernach.
And while visitors stroll along the banks of the Rhine or marvel at the cold-water geyser, the next TTS may just be making its way out into the world.
Just as the Rhine connects many countries from Andernach, LTS’s innovations also reach people far beyond city and national borders—with an impact that is felt around the globe.
