One City, Two Stories

Sometimes the most fascinating stories aren’t found in big headlines, but in the subtle connections within a city. In Andernach, one such thread leads from pharmaceutical entrepreneurship straight into the art world of the 19th century: to Lilli Wislicenus-Finzelberg.

From Finzelberg to Art

She was born in 1872 in Andernach as Elisabeth Emma Charlotte Finzelberg. Her father, Hermann Finzelberg, founded the Finzelberg company in the city in 1875; the company grew out of its pharmaceutical roots and remains synonymous with plant-based active ingredients to this day. Lilli, however, was drawn not to the laboratory but to the arts.

A Woman from Andernach on the International Stage

Her path led her away from Andernach at an early age. She studied sculpture in Berlin-Charlottenburg—at a time when women were anything but a common sight in the professional art world. In 1893, she even exhibited her work at the World’s Fair in Chicago. A young woman from Andernach on the international stage: that was bold, modern, and quite impressive.

Art with Attitude

As a sculptor, Lilli created portraits, reliefs, and sculptures characterized by a clear formal language and a sense of expression. She worked in an environment that was heavily dominated by men—and yet she consistently forged her own path. Not loudly, not scandalously, but persistently. That is precisely what makes her story so interesting today.

When Two Worlds Come Together

In 1896, she married the painter Hans Wislicenus, thereby bringing two worlds even closer together: the Finzelberg family of entrepreneurs from Andernach and the Wislicenus family of artists. This union almost creates a small portrait of the city: on the one hand, science, natural materials, and entrepreneurial spirit; on the other, art, design, and cultural influence.

Why Her Story Is Inspiring Today

And that is exactly why it’s worth talking about Lilli Wislicenus-Finzelberg again today. She shows that Andernach is more than just a beautiful town on the Rhine. Andernach is a place that can produce people with ideas, conviction, and a drive to make a difference.

From Andernach into the Future

This philosophy also resonates with modern companies in the region—such as LTS AG: tackling challenges, delivering quality, and making an impact from a strong regional foundation. From an artist’s studio to today’s innovative company, the idea remains the same: Anyone who wants to create something of their own needs courage, perseverance, and a healthy dose of conviction—just like our LTS.
